Laurel is located midway between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, in northern Prince George's County. Incorporated in 1870, the city maintains a historic district including its Main Street. Laurel is near Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory, the Fort Meade Army base, and the National Security Agency (NSA). It is also adjacent to Laurel Park Racecourse, a horse racetrack in Anne Arundel County.

What Makes Laurel Unique?
- Laurel Museum - the Laurel Museum is located in a former 1840's mill workers' home. The museum houses collections of books, photographs, tools, personal artifacts, textiles and oral histories. The Museums main floor is the site of exhibits devoted to the history of Laurel, Maryland and the surrounding community. Downstairs is devoted to the Gift Shop, additional exhibits and an audio-visual area.
- Laurel Park - is an American thoroughbred racetrack in Laurel, Maryland which opened in 1911. Its name was changed to "Laurel Race Course" for several decades until returning to the "Laurel Park" designation in 1994. Repeated renovations have marked the course's nearly 100 years of operation, though Maryland's horse racing industry is flagging.
- Laurel Boys and Girls Club - the Laurel Boys and Girls Club features 12 different sports activities with more than 3,000 children in its program. Currently the largest boys and girls club in Prince George's county.
