Kings Contrivance is third largest of the 10 villages in the planned community of Columbia, and is home to about 11,000 residents. It contains a Village Center, apartment complexes and housing developments. Kings Contrivance is located on historic land originally granted by one of the Lords Baltimore in 1730. The streets take their names from "The Folk Songs of North America," compiled by Alan Lomax. The street names in Huntington are taken from the works of Carl Sandburg. Dickinson is the first neighborhood in Columbia named for a woman, American poet Emily Dickinson. Amherst House, the Community Center located in Dickinson, was named for Amherst, Mass., the home of Emily Dickinson.

What Makes Kings Contrivance Unique?

• The Village Center - contains a Bagel Bin & Deli, a McDonald's, a Chinese restaurant, an Italian diner, a Subway restaurant, a pub, a liquor store, a CVS, several ATMs, a beauty salon, a dry cleaner, a formal wear shop, office space, medical offices, an Allstate insurance agency, and a cobbler.  
• Many trails weave in and around the neighborhoods providing access to the county parks, as well as to Columbia's extensive bike/hiking trail system.
• There are scenic and recreational parks including Gorman Park, Huntington Neighborhood Park, and Savage Park, all of which are maintained by Howard County Recreation and Parks and the Columbia Association.
