Columbia is a census-designated place and planned community in Howard County, Maryland. Developed by The Rouse Company, Columbia is the nation's most successful planned community. What began in 1962 as 14,100 acres of rural land has become a city of more than 97,000 residents, spread over 10 separate villages, with 2,500 businesses, more than 60,000 jobs, 21 million square feet of commercial space and a wide array of social, cultural, educational, entertainment and recreational programs and facilities. Also chosen by Money Magazine as No. 4 on the list of "Best Places to Live" for 2006.

Residents can walk along paths to watch the tree leaves change color, feed the ducks swimming lazily in the lakes and ponds, or grill hamburgers and hotdogs as children play on the many playgrounds in the community. More than 5,000 acres of open space provide residents with their own private getaway just minutes from all the opportunities found in nearby cities.
- People Tree - near Lake Kittamaqundi. The People Tree was designed by Jim Rouse to encourage interaction among neighbors and promote diversity. Many activities throughout the year are held near the sculpture including holiday celebrations, concerts and other special events.
